Max arrives and unknowingly converses with Jeff and Pam's son Chris who sympathetically gives him his water gun. He tells them there is a buyer, but they must decide by the end of the year, which puts extensive pressure on them. The McKenzies go to church the next day and run into their realtor. Max fears if Officer McCallister realizes he is home alone, his parents may get arrested.Ĭarol discovers Max was left behind and buys a ticket to head back. Officer Buzz McCallister arrives, but Pam diverts him. He attempts to scare them away by calling the police. Overhearing them talk about getting an "ugly little boy", Max assumes they are talking about kidnapping and selling him. Meanwhile, Jeff and Pam arrive at the Mercer's and get inside. Meanwhile, Max discovers the whole family has left and initially has fun, though he quickly grows bored and misses them. Telling Pam about it, they agree to get the doll back at night. During the commotion, he overhears the security code and sees where the house key is hidden. Believing that Max stole it, he locates the Mercer household the next day only to find the whole family hastily leaving. Ĭoncerned about losing their home, Jeff goes to get the doll only to find it is missing. Unfortunately, Max's family didn't realize that their son was sleeping in the car parked in the garage and left him at home, thinking he was in another vehicle with one of the rest of the members. Max, annoyed with the fuss, settles in the garage-parked car to watch cartoons and accidentally falls asleep without knowing it. As Max and Carol return home, the whole family is preparing to leave for Tokyo, Japan for the holidays, with Carol leaving earlier than the rest. Carol explains to Jeff that dolls with unusual deformities are rare and worth a lot of money, with an estimated $200,000. Max has a brief exchange with Jeff, during which the latter reveals a box of old dolls, including a malformed one with an upside down face. To make matters worse, Jeff's obnoxious and successful brother Hunter, his wife, Mei, and their son Ollie have decided to stay with them for Christmas.ĭuring an open house, Max Mercer and his mother Carol stop by to use the restroom. Jeff lost his job and Pam's salary is not enough to keep their home. Jeff and Pam McKenzie are trying to sell their house, but have not told their children, Abby and Chris.

But one can consider this product because of its ergonomic design, light-weight body and build quality. The price is almost 3X the price of an ordinary 2200mAh charger. The power bank comes in two variants – Micro-USB for Android and Lightning port for Apple products. The XS Powercard comes with a matte finish. This power bank keeps true to the Modi Make-In-India fever. The 2200mAh storage should be enough to charge most devices to about 75%. There is a multicolor LED light which indicates charging level. Also, it is a tedious task to restore the wire back in its slot. The power bank also serves as a USB cable for transferring data between a computer and a smartphone, a useful feature in our opinion, but some people may find the length of the wire to be an issue. Having said that, barely anyone is going to use that slider much because we want our smartphone to charge as quickly as possible. There is a slider, which can be used to regulate the current flow, but it is cumbersome to use. So while the pen drive can be used as a backup option, it cannot be used as your primary storage device. But, while using it, the Pendrive heats up quite easily. The Pendrive is embedded in the power bank and can be detached whenever needed. It comes with an 8GB/16GB/32GB flash storage USB Pendrive. It isn't clear how effective the technique was-the number of sinkings did drop sharply, but that may have been caused by other schemes adopted at the same time, such as grouping ships into large, guarded convoys. Over the course of the two World Wars, several thousand Allied ships were outfitted in dazzle camouflage. If there was time in the rush of war, a ship might be photographed in the harbor and out at sea to assess how well the designed pattern was followed and how effective it was at disguising the vessel's movements. Finally, the shapes were filled in with paint. Next, using the pattern plan as a guide, the outline of the camouflage was marked in chalk on the ship like a giant paint-by-numbers kit. After the pattern was approved, precise plans of the color scheme were drafted and sent to where the actual ship was docked. Designers studied the pair through periscopes to judge how well the camouflage worked and made adjustments as needed. Next, the dazzled model was placed next to a matching one painted plain gray and then the two were placed in front of various simulated backgrounds of water and sky. First, a wooden model of each ship was built to scale and then handed off to artists who designed and painted individualized patterns. The Navy called this disruptive camouflage razzle dazzle : odd, irregular patterns and colors that would confuse enemy gunners and throw off their aim by disguising the shape and motion of their ships.Īpplying the razzle dazzle idea took a lot more than handing sailors buckets of paint and letting them have it. But then the British had a startling idea-if they can't hide them, why not make the ships stand out instead? They decided to paint them in contrasting colors and random patterns, like zebras and giraffes, animals that are easy to spot but hard to track because the patterns they wear break up their outline. Although the military was very good at camouflaging troops and tanks on land, ships couldn't be painted to blend into the background because the colors of the sea and the sky are always changing. There was little that surface boats could do to hide from submarines. Submariners would sneak up on a moving ship, watch it just long enough to figure out its speed and direction, and then fire torpedoes into the ship's path. In the early days of World War I, German submarines devastated the British and American fleets. (Figure 1.2) Gazelles and whales have counter-shaded sides that flatten and minimize rounded shapes, as do color-blocked dresses. (Figure 1.1) Moths and caterpillars are shaped like leaves and twigs to fool predators, while cell phone towers are built like trees to hide their industrial clutter from neighbors. Zebras have wild stripes that disrupt their outlines especially when they move in groups, and so did dazzle-painted warships in World War I. Octopi and lizards match the color and texture of their skins with nearby rocks and vegetation to blend into the background, and manmade hunting gear is painted or woven to do the same thing. There are many different methods of camouflage. More recently, camouflage techniques have also been applied to fashion, architecture, and industrial design. Humans have long mimicked natural camouflage techniques in hunting and warfare. Animals use camouflage to help them eat and avoid being eaten. One of the oldest and most widespread examples of biomimicry is camouflage-the use of objects, colors, or illumination to conceal or confuse an observer. It can also be extremely complex, as in engineering filtering systems that pull salt out of seawater based on the chemical and mechanical reactions that operate across cell membranes. It can be as simple as merely copying a shape, such as building fan blades that look and perform much like whale flippers. Biomimicry views the natural world as a vast laboratory filled with completed experiments that can be adapted to make human activities more efficient. The stunning diversity of microbes, animals, and plants means that for every problem, nature has already produced many solutions. Through billions of years of evolution, organisms have faced and met the challenges of living on earth, over and over again. It means, "imitation of life," and describes the practice of adopting natural structures and strategies to solve human problems. Biomimicry is a fairly new word for an ancient practice. 1, adapted from information presented in Carver (1990), presents approximate reading rates for students in Grades 2-12. She read 92 words correctly in 1.5 minutes, or 61 words per minute (wpm). Maria was given a passage to read with 100 words. You may count out 100 words in a passage and then time the student as he or she reads the passage. Determining a student’s reading rateĪ student’s reading rate may be calculated by dividing the number of words read correctly by the total amount of reading time. Even into middle school, these students often devote an inordinate amount of energy to word identification. Students like Maria, Ryan, and Ben require more exposures and more practice to recognize individual words easily and automatically. She usually had to read materials several times in order to comprehend them. She complained that because she read so slowly, she could not understand what she was reading. Although she pronounced most words correctly, she read with little expression. When Maria was in sixth grade, she still read very slowly. For these children, decoding is not automatic or fluent, and their limited fluency may affect performance in the following ways: 1) they read less text than peers and have less time to remember, review, or comprehend the text 2) they expend more cognitive energy than peers trying to identify individual words and 3) they may be less able to retain text in their memories and less likely to integrate those segments with other parts of the text (Mastropieri, Leinart, & Scruggs, 1999).įigure 8.7 Sample spelling self-monitoring formĬover list word and rewrite correct spelling Some children have developed accurate word pronunciation skills but read slowly. The ability to read words by sight automatically is the key to skilled reading (Ehri, 1998). As noted, the concept of automaticity refers to a student’s ability to recognize words rapidly with little attention required to the word’s appearance. Children are successful with decoding when the process used to identify words is fast and nearly effortless or automatic. Meyer and Felton defined fluency as “ ‘the ability to read connected text rapidly, smoothly, effortlessly, and automatically with little conscious attention to the mechanics of reading, such as decoding” (1999, p. Reading fluency encompasses the speed or rate of reading, as well as the ability to read materials with expression. These chicken flavored treats are great for stressful. If anything the songs on Frail Bray are just as intense, if not more so than the ones on Cognicide, Tremulous, or any of their EP’s. According to the track-by-track article lead vocalist Jason Hall did with, “ the goal of was to make a big, bright hardcore-punk, rock and roll record.” And I’m happy to report that the band accomplished said goal - really, they hit a grand slam with this one.įirst off, it should be made very clear that just because Western Addiction went for a brighter sound, that does not in any way mean that they went softer. Three years later, the Bay Area punk rockers are back with their new full-length, Frail Bray and they have taken a different approach this time around. Tunes like “Righteous Lightning,” “The Rockery” (my favorite song of 2017 in general), and especially the ending track “Your Life Is Precious” really exemplify the melancholy sound of that record. There is no denying that it is very dark, even by hardcore standards. Western Addiction’s sophomore album Tremulous was easily one of the best albums to come out in 2017. Tremulous is a dark, severe album which punk needs in this current climate.By Denise Borders 0 Album Review: Western Addiction “Frail Bray” After seeing what Matt could do with my vocals, I was blown away.”Īchieved. “They’re a hardcore band, but it sounds so big and well-produced. “The inspiration for Tremulous was From Ashes Rise’s Nightmares, which Matt produced,” vocalist Hall says. Bayles brings a frantic and vibrant sound to their music. Western Addiction recruited Matt Bayles to mix, Bayles has worked with noise metal bands such as Isis, Botch, and Mastodon. Produced by Joey Cape, they remain three OG members plus one new guy. The band is Jason Hall on vocals, Ken Yamazaki (also of Dead To Me) on guitar and Chad Williams on drums, as well as Tony Teixeira on guitar. Angry and noisy, with a few breaks of settled rhythms, the LP is produced cleanly while still embracing the snarl and grit which boast undeniable angst and energy. There are quieter moments which allow the album to breathe. Musically caustic, most tracks confront and thrive to be unsettling. “You’re cynical, is what they say / How could there be any other way?!” is a classic line. This track happens to house the nastiest bass work on the album, having a spastic fit. The Descendents comparison shines brightly on multiple songs musically and vocally, especially on “Red Emeralds” and the “Taedium”. Tremulous is a strong salute to Adolescents, Circle Jerks, Black Flag and Descendents. The bass work truly elevates the music which adores the forefathers of ’80s West Coast hardcore. Critical social and political statements elevate this from just the fun punk to boost at a party. But, this is harsh hardcore and not just redundant pop punk. They can certainly grab onto a riff and be catchy. Western Addiction has consistently stood out. Gritty basslines are the foundation for ire filled tracks.įat Wreck Chords has been repetitive in its wheelhouse, over saturated with common bands who sound alike to me. Gruff vocals definitely add the punch needed for this band’s sharp delivery. Tremulous is a beefy return after eleven years, a grenade in the current climate. But, I felt the rest of the album, save “The Church of Black Flag”, just fell short to a solid but average punk record. Their debut, Cognicide, had a stand out track that lured me, “When A Good Friend Attacks” – phenomenal track. Those words describe Tremulous rather well, to boot. “Clatter and Hiss” opens the album with piss and fire. “we passed several beautiful cascades which fell from a great hight over the stupendous rocks which cloles the river on both sides nearly…the most remarkable of these casscades falls about 300 feet perpendicularly over a solid rock …” The Indians were a constant annoyance, a problem that greatly angered Lewis. The snowmelt/spring runoff was in full tilt causing the Corps much difficulty in “hawking” their perogues/canoes and portaging their gear. The Corps spent April 9th through the 12th 1806 below the rapids (Cascades). So, as I keep one eye on the eighteen-wheelers, I try, with the other, to keep that beauty in focus.Ī few more good pictures, I hope. However, there’s raw, expansive beauty here in the Gorge. The constant racket, rush, and confusion wear me down. Trekking the grinder today, I-84, all the way to Hood River. I’m out to a cool, cloudy morning, and by noon it fairs up and turns most pleasant. But to my good fortune the good weather holds. Kristy talked about the many Native Americans, dear friends she went to school with (a far away glint here), and how their heritage - and hers seems now a mix. Probably helped widen the ruts in the old Oregon Trail, which passed the Cascades. Her family came from Canada many years ago. Her father, grandfather - all lived out their lives here. Kristy was born and raised right here by the Locks. A slow evening, so we talked Lewis and Clark, and Native American history. Had a long, interesting chat with Kristy, waitress at the local diner. Thanks Barbara and Roger, for your hospitality. In ’04 I stayed at the Bridge of the Gods Motel, right downtown, within the shadow of the bridge. They like, and cater to, long distance backpackers (the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail drops off the mountain into Cascade Locks before crossing the Bridge of the Gods on its way from Mexico to Canada). The people here are friendly, a change over the last 200 years. Everything a tired hiker could possibly need or want is within less than five minutes walking distance. Pilot Rock, Horsetail Falls, a hiking trail, a short walk on the Union Pacific Railroad, the Old Historic Columbia River Gorge Highway, and finally, the Bridge of the Gods in Cascade Locks.Ĭascade Locks is a five star trail town. Lots more pictures today along the Gorge. they informed us that the nations above them were in the same situation…” “This morning we came to a resolution to remain at our present encampment or some where in this neighbourhood untill we had obtained as much dried meat as would be necessary for our voyage as far as the Chopunnish. Natives descending the river “…complained much of the scarcity of food among them. They were also concerned about provisions for their return so hunting parties were sent out. During that time they encamped above the mouth of the Washougal. Much time was spent exploring the lower tributaries of the Columbia, notably the Multnomah (Willamettre) and the Quicksand (Sandy). The Corps didn’t reach the Cascades until April 12th 1806. I think this is going to prove a most memorable journey - thank you dear Lord. My back’s a little sore, the body a tad tired, but looks like the old legs are going to come back under me one more time. I’ve been out here a week now, nearly 150 miles. If you take a moment, you can read my comments about this old road at my September 7th Journal entry for that year. Hiking the Old US30 Highway, built back in the 20s was a memorable part of my Odyssey ’04 trek, and I find it no less enjoyable today. This is a very short hiking day, comparatively, only around seventeen miles, but I tire from climbing around, plus carrying a heavier pack (it rained last night and I slept through - yes, I hadn’t rigged my fly - everything I have is soaked!). I detour from Old US30 to trek along one of the trails for a distance. Indeed, this area I’m passing today has the highest concentration of “high” waterfalls, more than any other place in North America. They climb along and around the bluffs and side ravines, generally between the many high waterfalls. There are a number of hiking trails within the public areas here in the Gorge. Bridge of the Gods, Cascade Locks, Oregon to Rogers Pass, Montana – 2006 In the end, I think Omens Of Ice will be a well received addition to the Elder Sign family. And it adds, you guessed it, to the immersion. All of this simulates the harshness of the untamed Alaskan elements. You are going to have to go for these cards regardless, because the other (known) options may not be prudent. And 3 of the 6 explorable cards are placed face down, so you have to choose some of the adventures without knowing in advance which tasks you will need to resolve. The backs of the adventure cards also have effects on them. Every time you explore a card with this effect, you will have something trigger immediately – it could be good, but probably not. The adventure cards, themselves, provide a different mechanic, the “entry” effect. These additional choices add to the game’s immersion – I’d really like a unique item, but those two supplies might keep us from losing some stamina later on. Sometimes the adventure cards will give you a choice of rewards if you successfully complete them (or penalties when you fail). This has to be by design and gives the game a little bit more “story” feel. There just don’t seem to be enough in the Stage 1 deck to get to victory. Players will need to progress into Stage 2 adventures in order to get enough Elder Signs to win the game. Each stage has two “special” adventure cards which will need to be completed to keep the adventure moving forward. The adventure cards are separated into two decks, each representing one of two stages of the game. If investigators have acquired enough stuff during their adventures, they may be able to numb some of the sting of the Mythos cards’ effects. Also, Mythos cards are resolved as they are revealed, and the investigators get to choose which of their two effects will occur. These supplies can be used to help lessen or stave off some of the harsh effects that occur as the game progresses. The card also keeps track of how many supplies the investigators have managed to acquire. This track is double sided, with the “summer” side being less difficult than the “winter” side. The longer it takes you to destroy the Ancient One, the more weather effects start to take hold. There is also a track card that counts the days you’ve been out in the wilds. They provide additional random obstacles for your investigators to overcome. These tokens are placed on the various adventure cards during the course of play, similarly to the monster tokens. In addition to the new decks, Omens adds weather effects into the mix in the form of storm tokens. Of course, Fantasy Flight also gives us some new rules to stimulate the brain cells. READ all of Geek Girl Authority’s Game Reviews, here! Omens also provides three new Ancient Ones to take on, the “easiest” of which has an average rating. There are 8 new investigators, 5 each of Common, Unique, Spell, and Ally cards that get mixed in with those from the original game, as well as 12 new monster tokens. Secondly, like Gates of Arkham, there are whole new Mythos and Adventure decks that are substituted in full for the base game’s cards. First of all, the adventurers are exploring the frozen tundra of the Alaskan wilds, so the art on the various cards provides a whole new look to the game. To me though, Omens Of Ice, the new expansion coming out this week, feels more like a sequel than an expansion. Those expansions added their own tweaks to the base game and were quite fun. I have had the chance to play each of the first two expansions, Unseen Forces and Gates of Arkham, once. It may not always work out well for the investigators, and, therefore, the world. I always respect its challenges and try to embrace the tension commensurate with saving the world from impending doom at the tentacles of an Ancient One, even though the very people you are protecting would send you away if you told them you were trying to acquire enough Elder Signs to lock away Evil (pronounced EEEveel). I have played Elder Sign at least twenty times, if not more. The mechanics are quite solid and fun, but it’s the immersion in theme that takes it to the “classic” level, in my opinion. “…an excellent cooperative game experience” ~ Rob FenimoreĮlder Sign, by Fantasy Flight Games, is a board game classic. |
